Our Story

Emerging from the collaborative efforts of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Department of Social Development and Carroll Shaw Memorial Centre, the Foodbank model is not just about food relief; it’s a multi-pronged attack on hunger. Piloted in the West Rand Region, this innovative program recognizes that simply providing a food parcel to a family does more than alleviate immediate hunger. It liberates resources, allowing families to prioritize other essential needs, such as healthcare or education.

The Foodbank model transcends the traditional one-dimensional food bank approach. Beyond the distribution of essential groceries, it offers a bouquet of interventions tailored to empower beneficiaries and foster long-term food security. This might involve skills training, financial literacy workshops, or community gardens – anything that equips families with the tools to build a brighter future.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Carroll Shaw Memorial Centre’s Board of Directors for their invaluable guidance and vision. Their dedication to this collaborative effort paves the way for a future where food security is not merely a dream, but a tangible reality for countless families in the West Rand and beyond.

Bridging the Gap: The Carroll Shaw Memorial Center Food Bank

The Carroll Shaw Memorial Center Food Bank operates under a distinct philosophy compared to traditional models. Unlike a money bank that accumulates resources, our food bank acts as a bridge, swiftly distributing incoming donations directly to those experiencing food insecurity. This unwavering commitment to immediate action stems from a simple truth: poverty demands urgent solutions.

This initiative, birthed by the Gauteng Provincial Government’s social development department, aimed to create sustainable livelihoods. Tested successfully at the Carroll Shaw Memorial Center, it expanded to encompass Sedibeng, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, and Johannesburg, echoing the UN’s Millennium Development Goal of eradicating poverty.

Entrusted with this crucial mission, the Carroll Shaw Memorial Center, with its deep community roots, was chosen as the non-profit spearhead. We identify communities most in need, and the department assesses households before we deliver food parcels.
